Memories of John E. Tyler, Jr.
The region lost a local son, beloved husband and talented land use attorney on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, when John E. "JR" Tyler Jr. died in his home in King George County of a heart attack. He was 41 years old.
JR, a graduate of the College of William & Mary and T.C. Williams School of Law, grew up in Fauquier County, where he attended Fauquier High School. Upon his graduation from law school in 1994, JR began providing legal services to the town of Colonial Beach, where he served as town attorney from 1996 through 2002. In 2003, JR joined the land use law firm of Leming and Healy, where he specialized in legal research and prepared numerous briefs in support of local and appellate cases.
JR was an avid student of the law, and believed that our legal system is designed to provide a forum for fair- minded resolution of disputes in a civilized society. He also was a fierce advocate on behalf of the clients of the firm.
While serving as town attorney, JR met and married the love of his life, Valerie Stepp, who also practiced law in the area. The couple married Sept. 9, 2000, and resided in King George with their family of beloved pets that included three dogs, Amy, Belle and Cinder, and four cats, Kittytawn, Bat, Milo and Andy. JR also was a lover of trains, both model and real, and was a Disney aficionado, with Disney World being a yearly destination for JR and Valerie.
JR is survived by his wife of 10 years, Valerie; his grandparents Harry E. Taylor and Beatrice Taylor of King George; and his brother, Erik Tyler of Gloucester.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at The Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg to commemorate JR's life, with a family greeting period immediately preceding the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Stafford County SPCA.
JR will be sorely missed by his family, friends, pets and colleagues.
Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, is handling the arrangements. An online guest book may be signed at nashandslawfh .com.
